Last month, the European Council of Interior Architects (ECIA) held their Annual General Assembly in Vienna. Our Director, Liz attended in her role as President of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID). It was a wonderful opportunity to make connections within the industry and to visit many inspirational places.

The ECIA was founded in 1992 to encourage a free exchange of people and ideas relating to Interior Architecture across Europe. There are now 22 members of the ECIA, with Hungary and Bulgaria being voted in this year. The ECIA have made it their mission to represent and promote the Interiors profession and to achieve wider public and government recognition at national and cross-national levels.

There were many interesting discussions held during the Assembly. Liz was part of a group discussing the future uses of Interior Architecture, exploring topics such as the aging/changing population, trends & waste, inclusivity, safety and climate change.

One of the highlights of the trip was a visit to the Villa Beer, an important example of Viennese residential culture. It is currently undergoing a renovation to turn it into a museum, and they hope to welcome their first guests in Spring 2026.

Liz was also taken on a tour of The Hoxton, designed by BWM Designers and Architects. It is a beautiful 1950’s building that has been repurposed into a hotel and is a fantastic example of how to maintain/ celebrate original features of a listed building whilst making it fit for purpose today.

There was also a visit to Formdepot, a collective of designers and craftspeople, all collaborating in an incredible showroom space which demonstrates their designs and products together. Liz particularly loved these fabulous handmade tiles by Karak

Overall, it was a truly inspiring experience with great relationships formed between the countries, which will hopefully lead to further discussion and collaboration. Next year’s General Assembly will be held in Warsaw, Poland where we expect many more interesting talks, updates on the industry and inspirational interiors to visit.
